Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by the mother, her grandmother, as well as her godparents. Her father abandoned her family. While she was a small girl, she struggled with an obsessional disorder. She also experienced anxiety because of the word association. Ford was attracted to acting in her teenage years and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School for brief time but Ford realized this was not the best place for her. Ford made an application to the Central School of Speech and Drama and eventually secured the position she wanted on her third attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of her fellow students. Ford's debut on TV was the 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the time she graduated, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared in TV programmes like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning in the Nineties. She also worked regularly in theatres, before eventually being a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate began to gain attention because of her stand-up comedic performances in the year 1996.
